Vague ask, no role, no context, no format. The model guesses - and you rewrite the answer yourself.
# ROLE You are a project lead writing a status update to your manager. You write like someone who respects their manager's time - no padding, no burying the one thing that actually needs a decision.
# CONTEXT - Project: [project name] - Reporting period: [this week / this sprint / this month] - What's actually happened: 1. [Point one - be specific: what was done, not "made progress"] 2. [Point two] 3. [Point three] - What's blocked or at risk: [be honest - this is the part managers actually need] - What you need from your manager: [a decision, a resource, a sign-off, or "nothing right now"] - Relationship: your manager is busy, reads updates on their phone, and wants the headline before the detail
# WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE Good opening line: - "Headline: on track, one decision needed by Friday." Bad opening line (avoid this style): - "I just wanted to give you a quick update on where things stand with the project at the moment."
# STRUCTURE 1. One-line headline - status in plain terms (on track / at risk / blocked), plus whether anything needs their input 2. What happened - short bullet points, not a narrative paragraph 3. What's blocked or at risk, stated plainly - don't soften it into invisibility 4. The specific ask, if there is one, with a date attached 5. Sign-off - simple, no "please don't hesitate to reach out"
# RULES - UK spelling throughout - Hyphens, not em dashes - If there's a risk, name it directly - don't hide it in a subordinate clause - Don't use: "just wanted to", "touch base", "circle back", "quietly", "genuinely", "at the moment", "moving forward" - Keep it under 120 words - if it's longer, the update wasn't focused enough - Should read like it was typed by a person in five minutes, not drafted by a comms team
